How Does One Hide Part Of A Picture?

Well before I go any further please let me just say that I'm obviously new to this forum, and I'm having trouble understanding all the posts simply because they're using the French language. So my apologies for if this has been asked before, I tried a "Search" but found nothing that could maybe help me.

Anyway, I have a picture that I'd like to remove/hide part of. It has been suggested that this can be done by using the "Crop" feature, my question is, how is this done? Please understand that I'm pretty much hopeless when it comes to using Picture/Image programs, but I sure would like to learn.

May I also say what a great program PhotoFiltre is, I've used it for some of the "simple" features that is included with it, such as transforming pictures into looking like somethig completely different, kudo's to the creator/s of such a neat program.

Before select the part to preserve with a selction shape (rectangle, ellipse, ...). After use Image > crop
