Making any colour transparent (if it's consistent in hue)

Hi,
Does anyone know how I can make one colour transparent? Normally, one can use the wand and clear, but for convenience (for example removing a white background where there would still be white within text even though the outer white has been cleared) it would easier to remove the entire colour.
