Is it possible to fill an area with colour which looks as if it has been painted in? As far as I can see the fill tool will only fill in solid colour or a fainter version of that colour. I would like the fill to show up the brushmarks.

after fill, you can use the artistic filter Palette kniff or a texture with the menu Texture > Other...

Thank you, Antonio! Unfortunately if I try the Texture tool after the Fill tool it affects the whole picture rather than the bounded area I want it to fill.
