Image Explorer Question

Simple question. What exactly does the Image Explorer do? I see it opened a bottom pane, but what do I do from here? I played around a bit, but can't figure it out.

I did do a search within the forum, however the results came up in French, which unfortunately i can't understand.

click the small arrow button (at middle left) and choose explore a folder for example...
