How do I modify a GIF file that has already been created ?

Message par Roger at CCCC »

I'm sorry I do not read French and so I don't know where to post this simple question. Photofilter seems very good; the first thing I want to do is load a GIF file that is already created, and then modify it. However, when I load it, I can't modify it. I know this is very simple, but I clicked on every button I can find, and the file refuses to change. In fact, most of the buttons are light colored, indicating, I assume, that they are not functional. So I would appreciate any help in getting started (or point me to a VERY elementary tutorial). Thanks for any response !!!

Photofiltre does not create Gif files and therefore, you cannot modify it directly.

You could import it into Photofiltre which would mean getting it into Photofiltre as frames and modify the frames. You will then have to use a software such as "Unfreeze" located at http://www.whitsoftdev.com/unfreez/ to compile it back as a Gif file.

Photofiltre Studio which is going to be a commercial version of Photofiltre and which is now in beta will include the ability to create Gif files, but you'll have to wait for that and then pay a very small fee ... nominal I presume.

Thank you, JodyGeorge, for your reply. I have downloaded "unFreeze" and it works as expected. However, you said:

"You could import it into Photofiltre which would mean getting it into Photofiltre as frames and modify the frames."

I cannot find an "import" function, nor does the help information mention "frames." The File menu contains only the Open option for opening files. Can you provide any more information about "import" or "frame?"

Thanks again.

I see that the Help information DOES mention the "File/Import" function. However, my "File" menu does not HAVE such an option. Am I missing something in my version of the Photofilter program?

Hi :D ,
To import a GIF animated File, you must download the plugin "Animated GIF import" :D 8)

When you open a GIF file, it's always in indexed colors. So you have to get it into RGB colors by Image/Mode/RGB colors to modify it  (or use the button with rainbow colors)

Thank you for your responses. I finally figured out what you told me and it works. I was uncertain initially because:
1. I didn't know where the Plugins were or how to install them. I finally found them on the website.
2. My GIF is NOT animated, but the plug in works anyway to import it.
3. I do not understand Francois' comment about Image/Mode/RGB colors. I was able to add a text box to my GIF, then save it as a GIF file under a new name, and it appears to be correct. I did NOT have to change the Image/Mode setting and the setting is dim anyway so I don't think I can.
If there is anything else I should know, I would appreciate your comments.

I have another question, but I will ask it as a new topic, since my other question refers to color selection, not importing.

Thanks again for your help.
