How do I add an alpha channel in PF6 ?

How do I add an alpha channel in PF6 ?
I am trying to use a photoshop plugin but it says the image requires an alpha channel for it to work-how would I add this (photofiltre) and what format would I save it in??

Hi Shagger,
sorry i had not understood the context.
Try Menu/Image/Mask transparency or something like (i haven't installed the english release).
Then you can observ that Image/mode is changed now in Indexed colours .
You can save the picture in any type for transparency available in the choice box, but png is best than gif.

When you save in png or gif the mask of transparency you get the alpha channel.
Then you copy this mask. On the original image you do use Edit/Paste special/Mask and with a right clic, Options to adjust opacity.
The result must be saved also in png. Then i suppose you get the good result.
I had never practiced this way and i hope it's the right one.
Other way, i think you would ask on a Gimp forum.
